Even though Steven Tyler has been exploring his country side lately, that doesn’t mean he’s completely abandoned the classic rock sound that launched Aersosmith. Tyler performed at David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center on Monday night (May 2), where he played an array of Aerosmith hits, his new country songs and even Janis Joplin’s classic “Piece of My Heart.”

Tyler has been focused on releasing his new country album, but he reminded the crowd that he hadn’t forgotten his roots. “Don’t forget I’m from f—ing New York City!” Tyler said. “I was born four blocks from here” (via EW.com).

He opened his show with three Aerosmith songs, “Sweet Emotion,” “Jaded,” and “Cryin’” before turning in a powerful rendition of Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” The screen behind Tyler displayed drawings of her, as he belted out the big chorus. “Her truth hit you like a nude beach in San Tropez,” he said about Joplin.

Tyler did spend the middle part of his set playing his newer country flavored songs, including the singles “Love is Your Name” and “Red, White, and You” before closing out with more Aerosmith hits.

Tyler’s yet unnamed country album has not received a release date yet. Watch him cover “Piece of My Heart” below:
